March for Health, Homes, Jobs and Education. End Austerity Now!
Saturday 16th AprilAssemble: 1pm, Gower Street/Euston Road, London NW1
The crisis of the Tory government means a real change in direction for this country, including in our foreign policy, is now on the cards. Tens of thousands of people are going to protest on 16th Aprilagainst this destructive government and its skewed priorities. Instead of never-ending wars, we need investment in homes, jobs, healthcare and education, which are the preconditions for a civilised society.
It is very important that the anti-war message is made loud and clear. There will be a Welfare not Warfare bloc organised by Stop the War and CND, which will start assembling at 12.
UN takeover of Libya runs into trouble
Already by mid-2013, 60,000 people had died as a result of the Western bombing of Libya and the civil war which it had fuelled. Western meddling is continuing to antagonise the population and is focused on neo-colonial objectives, including the control over Libya's resources. Libya is now the world's second largest producer of natural gas.
The Western-sponsored attempt to install a 'unity' candidate for prime minister, Fayez al Sarraj, is experiencing further problems. One of the two parallel governments fighting for power (the one based in Tripoli rather than Tobruk) recently expressed its agreement with this new 'unity' candidate, but has now withdrawn its support. The purpose of this whole operation is to facilitate Western military intervention in Libya.
Stop the War will continue to argue against further military intervention, including at a meeting about Libya on the 26th April at the Bloomsbury Central Baptist Church in Central London (235 Shaftesbury Avenue, London WC2H 8EP).
Nobel Peace Laureate joins our campaign for an arms embargo on Saudi Arabia
Nobel Peace Laureate Mairead Maguire has joined Stop the War's call for the UK government to stop selling arms to Saudi Arabia and to stop providing military assistance to the Saudi dictatorship in its savage and ongoing bombing campaign in Yemen, which has led to thousands of deaths and enormous suffering.
Write to your MP to encourage them to sign the Early day motion 1170 and support the implementation of the European Parliament's call for an arms embargo on Saudi Arabia.
Crossing borders conference, Lesvos, 7-10th July
Stop the War's patron Tariq Ali and Stop the War officer John Rees will speak at this world conference on the plight of the refugees. You can register for it here.
