At Peace Action we’re all in as participants in the debate over efforts to block Iran’s capability to one day build a nuclear weapon -- if Iran makes a future decision to build a weapon.
But what about a debate over the thousands of nuclear weapons already deployed by countries like the U.S., Russia, France, and Israel? Those weapons’ very existence threatens us each day. 
Over the last five days, I’ve been in New York for the UN’s Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) review conference. It’s inspiring to join nearly 8,000 peace advocates in our “Peace and Planet” mobilization in rallies and education on global disarmament alongside the conference.
Can you write Congress today? Ask the U.S. to take steps towards a nuclear weapons free world.
The NPT review conference is a chance for all nations of the world to come together to work towards the elimination of the nuclear threat.  The nuclear weapons states, like the U.S., ought to be leading the charge given the NPT mandate that they work towards their own disarmament.
Sadly, the United States is not in a great position to help lead the world in eliminating the nuclear weapons threat. Unbelievably, the U.S. is instead embarking on a politically and fiscally disastrous 30-year, $1-trillion campaign further develop the U.S. nuclear weapons complex.
That sure isn’t walking the anti-nuclear weapons talk.
That’s why we’re supporting the Smarter Approach to Nuclear Expenditures (SANE) Act. The SANE Act is a bill that would save taxpayers approximately $100 billion over ten years by scaling down, delaying, or canceling a variety of obsolete nuclear weapons programs.
Congress will be facing some tough trade offs very soon. The budget ax will fall somewhere. By acting now, and recruiting Congressional allies, we can help put nukes on the chopping block.
Just think what we could do with the $100 billion we could cut from nuclear weapons. Our communities desperately need those resources to invest in jobs, infrastructure, and education.
Peace Action formed over 60 years ago as The Committee for a SANE Nuclear Policy. The SANE Act’s name is a nod to all those years of activism – and now we need to keep it going.

2 of 13 Sign the petition: President Obama must release the full text of the Trans-Pacific Partnership

On Friday, President Obama lashed out at activists and elected representatives who have opposed the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) as the next NAFTA and a secret corporate giveaway, saying that “when you dig into the facts, they are wrong.”

In response, Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Sherrod Brown, two of the leading opponents of TPP, said they agreed with President Obama that the American people should dig into the facts on the proposed deal. However, this would require the Obama administration to declassify the draft of the deal, because right now the public isn’t even allowed to read it.

Join CREDO and Daily Kos in becoming a citizen co-signer of the letter from Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Sherrod Brown to President Obama: Release the text of the Trans-Pacific Partnership draft before Congress votes on Fast Track.

In a letter to the president, Sens. Warren and Brown wrote:
The American people should be allowed to weigh in on the facts of the TPP before Members of Congress are asked to voluntarily reduce our ability to amend, shape, or block any trade deal. The press and the public should be allowed to examine the details that corporate executives and lobbyists have already been allowed to influence for years. Members of Congress should be able to discuss the agreement with our constituents and to participate in a robust public debate instead of being muzzled by classification rules. Before Congress votes to facilitate the adoption of the TPP, the American public should be allowed to see for themselves whether it's good deal for them.
Sens. Warren and Brown are absolutely right. This secret "trade" deal would eviscerate broad swaths of regulations that protect consumers, workers, the environment and the soundness of our financial system. And it would set up a legal regime where corporate profits trump the policy priorities of sovereign governments–and that’s just the stuff we know about.

The Obama administration should immediately release the TPP text to the public and Congress so we can have a spirited and informed public debate on the largest trade deal in our history.

Each year the Pentagon receives billions of dollars outside of its regular budget through its own slush fund. The House is proposing to put $92 billion in that slush fund for FY16; the Senate is advocating for $89 billion. These numbers are a significant increase above the current year's fund of $64 billion. More importantly, they are tens of billions of dollars more than what experts estimate that the actual costs of the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria will be. Those tens of billions of wasteful spending in this massive slush fund are tax dollars not available to pay for vital domestic needs here at home.

Ask your legislators to reject the “OCO” budget gimmick and to prioritize nation building here at home.

This is an excellent article bringing together many of the inconsistencies and mis-representations of the Boston Marathon Bombing atrocity that should have exonerated the brothers in a real court of law.

PLEASE send this to anyone who will listen, and to anyone who can possibly throw a legal wrench into these disastrous proceedings!

A young defenseless boy has been brutalized and converted in the public eye from a normal innocent admired student into a hated monster- treatment which he does not deserve, and is not equipped to deflect. I fear for his life and for his sanity. Even his lawyers are helping the Prosecution to doom him to a death penalty.

He needs a legal cavalry to save him from this ultra-controlled captivity- which appears to disallow ANY contact with those who really could help him defend himself. He is doomed in his current state of detention.

Gallipoli 100 years on: Is Anzac Day a 'nationalist circus'

25 April 2015 marks the hundredth anniversary of the start of the British-led military invasion of Gallipoli on Turkey’s Dardanelle Peninsula, which resulted in over 200,000 dead and wounded in an eight-month period.

Gallipoli was a military disaster. Yet, a century on, politicians seeking to glorify the First World War, are calling the huge loss of life at Gallipoli "a price worth paying."

As the Australian government spends $300 million commemorating the WWI centenary, and using it to promote militarism and nationalist myths, veterans' groups have condemned the "nationalist circus" that Anzac Day has become.

The UK government, which is spending £60 million on its own nationalist circus commemorating WW1, has a number of Anzac Day events, including in London and Turkey. There will of course be little mention of Winston Churchill's role as prime mover of the Gallipoli catastrophe, which lead to his dismissal from the British government a hundred years ago.

Rather than celebrating the rewriting of history to promote new wars being waged on this 100th anniversary, it is important to remember what really happened at Gallipoli.

Among the features are two conflicting views of The Water Diviner, Russell Crowe's film about Gallipoli, which was Australia's highest grossing film in 2014. One reviewer says the film is anti-war, the other says the opposite.
Armenia: the genocide that dare not speak its name

"The Armenian genocide is not an allegation, a personal opinion or a point of view, but rather a widely documented fact supported by an overwhelming body of historical evidence," said a US senator named Barack Obama in 2006, adding in 2008, "As president I will recognize the Armenian genocide."
 But, as President, Obama has refused to do what he promised. He is not alone. David Cameron and other western leaders have also made the slaughter, that killed 1 to 1.5 million Armenians, the genocide that dare not speak its name.

Why? For fear of upsetting Turkey, their ally in Nato and in various western military interventions - eg Syria. Turkey refuses to acknowlege the scale of the crime perpetrated on Armenia.

Recently, comedian John Oliver made an informal but important point on the sheer ridiculousness that is Section 215 of the Patriot Act: the NSA has bended their interpretation of the law to access and monitor the most personal of our everyday communications at a frightening scale.1

But we can put a stop to this illegal and unconstitutional mass surveillance if we get loud this week.
Here's the deal: Congress is back in Washington after a two-week recess, and reauthorization of the Patriot Act is on the agenda. According to House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, the chamber could take up three key sections of the Patriot Act set to expire in June as early as this month2 — including Section 215.

You better believe that the intelligence agencies are going to do everything they can to ensure these provisions are reauthorized. Can you make a phone call to your representative and ask that they vote against reauthorizing Section 215 of the Patriot Act?

Feeling a sudden sense of déjà vu? While the most questionable provisions of the Patriot Act, like Section 215, were only initially authorized for a fixed number of years, Congress has reauthorized them every single time since passage of the law in 2001.


To add insult to the injury that is invasion of our privacy: according to the White House's own Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board, mass surveillance hasn't made a difference in making us safer.3  So why the heck is this even under consideration to be continued?

These phone calls to Congress can really make a difference in putting the pressure on our elected officials to protect our civil liberties once and for all. Can you call your representative today?

It can be argued that the Senate Foreign Relations Committee last week passed legislation that might make it harder for the international community to reach a final agreement with Iran on its nuclear program.
Dozens of Representatives on the other side of the Capitol are taking a much more positive step to support the historic framework reached with Iran on its nuclear program.
Reps. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Lloyd Doggett (D-TX), and David Price (D-NC) are getting other members to sign a letter that supports diplomacy with Iran over war.
Call your Rep. today at 202-224-3121 and ask them if they have signed the Schakowsky letter that supports the current negotiations with Iran.  If they have, thank them. If not urge them to do so soon before the letter is sent. 
This letter is important as it shown support in Congress for the historic framework reached by the international community and Iran that will keep it from making a nuclear weapon if it chose to do so.  The details and final technical points still need to be negotiated and a final accord signed by the June 30th deadline.
Opponents of the deal fail to provide a better alternative.  We could break off negotiations, but that would put Iran in a place where it could make the materials need for a crude nuclear bomb within weeks.  We could push for more sanctions.  The U.S. has almost maxed out on its sanctions and there isn’t the appetite for more sanctions from other countries.  And the greatest folly would be to use military intervention that would only set Iran back a few years and push them to definitively obtain a nuclear warhead as soon as possible.

Sign the petition: Tell corporations to pay their fair share

This week marks Tax Day. Each and every year, major profitable corporations avoid paying billions in taxes by exploiting complicated tax loopholes like inversions, valuation discounts and real estate investment trusts.
 
In 1952, the corporate income tax accounted for about 32 percent of all federal tax revenue. Today, despite record-breaking profits, corporate taxes bring in just 11 percent.

But some members of Congress still don’t think that corporations should pay what they rightfully owe.

Although we have an $18 trillion national debt, some members of Congress refuse to raise revenue by asking these corporate giants to pay their fair share. Now, some of these same members of Congress are saying we need savage cuts to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and other programs that help the most vulnerable Americans in order to pay down the debt.

Let’s make sure these profitable corporations pay what they owe. The Obama Administration can use executive actions to close egregious loopholes and stop corporations from hiding profits in offshore tax havens like the Cayman Islands.

Our Message to President Barack Obama and Treasury Secretary Jack Lew:

It is time to eliminate corporate tax loopholes that are robbing American taxpayers. Please sign an executive order that will cut these six loopholes, none of which would require congressional approval:
  1. The check-the-box loophole allows multinational companies to characterize their offshore subsidiaries in different ways to different governments so that their profits are untaxed.
  2. The Hewlett-Packard loophole allows American corporations to use short-term loans from their subsidiaries to circumvent the requirement that they pay U.S. taxes on their offshore profits when those profits are brought to the U.S.
  3. The corporate inversions loophole allows an American corporation to merge with a (usually much smaller) foreign corporation and then re-incorporate as a foreign company to avoid U.S. taxes, even as it continues to operate and be managed in the U.S.
  4. The carried interest loophole allows hedge fund managers to characterize their compensation (which they earn for managing other people’s money) as capital gains, which is subject to lower personal income tax rates than other types of income.
  5. Valuation discounts are restrictions placed on small business property given to family members (to keep the business in the family, for example) that are often meaningless, but are claimed to dramatically reduce their value for estate and gift tax purposes.
  6. The real estate investment trust (REIT) loophole allows private prisons, billboard companies, casinos and other companies to claim that they are making money from rents to avoid paying the corporate income tax.

BOSTON MARATHON MARTIAL LAW DRILL April 15, 2013: "Surely This Is Normal... Or Is It??" at Peekay Boston YouTube Channel (11:30) Peekay Boston says, “Jeff Bauman a Great American Hero... How can Anyone say that what we see in the Iconic Boston photo of him in a wheelchair is Not Normal?” Bauman not only lost two legs. He also got “hero” status when he identified the two Tsarnaev brothers to the FBI as the “terrorist” bombers! The other “hero” was the Cowboy Hat wearing Carlos Arredondo, who rescued Bauman by breaking all standard medical protocols by putting Bauman in a wheel-chair instead of flat out on a stretcher to reduce blood loss. Why did the many trained doctors and nurses who participate in the annual Boston Marathon “Mass Casualty Drill” not rescue Bauman properly if it was indeed real and not the annual drill done with “unwitting participants” gone live? How does breaking the protocols make you a hero instead of the subject of a lawsuit? Why did the huge number of medical professionals and ambulances available and participating in the annual drill not rescue Bauman? Is that normal? 

The fact that Jeff Bauman was released from the hospital just 11 days after allegedly losing two leg, and the fact that he was fully recovered 19 days later, smiling and waving the flag at the Boston Bruins hocky game is, well, “NORMAL” in post-9/11 America! In an interview Bauman even explained his miraculous and rapid recovery to his being part of the PR campaign called “Boston Strong”. He answered that his doctors said he was a 'wolverine'.” 

Yet Dr. Stan Monteith, a doctor  who has performed amputations and who can also think critically. Excerpts: TODAY thousands of runners and hundreds of thousands of spectators are unwittingly taking part in a planned disaster. Yet, they are not just safe from harm (except for the variety brought on by running 26.2 miles), they also are participants in an event that will make the citizens of Greater Boston safer in case of a natural catastrophe or terrorist attack. Primary responsibility for the health and well-being of both runners and spectators in Boston rests with Boston Emergency Medical Service (BEMS), along with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and Emergency Management Agency. According to BEMS chief Richard Serino, his department considers events like the marathon and the Fourth of July celebration as "planned disasters" - safe, controlled environments that present "an opportunity to test some things you would never want to test in a real disaster." Although the principal goal during such events remains the safety of everyone involved, organizers have realized that these annual gatherings of hundreds of thousands of people present the perfect opportunity to evaluate new technologies, exercise disaster plans, and build vital relationships between public safety agencies and the private sector… This type of innovation is not limited to Massachusetts. In Washington, D.C., the city's evacuation plan is tested during the mass exodus of people after the fireworks finale at the Fourth of July festivities. California has developed medical surge plans to be used after catastrophes such as an earthquake in San Francisco or a nuclear terrorist attack in Los Angeles. The New York Police Department has created robust intelligence and counter-terrorism divisions to protect its residents. Massachusetts is better prepared for a real disaster because every Patriot's Day and Fourth of July is treated as a ‘disaster.’” Arnold Bogis is a research fellow at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government.

This same man wrote this article in the Huffington Post in 2009 and for some reason updated it in 2011. Listen to the attitude conveyed toward "local authorities" that treats them like children.

Extensive planning began several years ago, and these efforts encompassed all levels of government as well as the private sector… As the Taliban's influence spreads (WTF?), concern about the security of Pakistan's nuclear weapons and materials grows. Terrorist acquisition of a nuclear bomb, or the materials required to construct one, would fulfill President Obama's warning that "one terrorist with one nuclear weapon could unleash massive destruction."… Unfortunately many communities have not gotten the point… Two assumptions prevail at the local level: that any nuclear explosion will completely destroy a major city and that the military is the only organization capable of responding… These ideas are fueled by Cold War-era memories in which the threat of nuclear war with the Soviet Union meant thousands of bombs would fall on U.S. cities. However, scenarios involving a nuclear terrorist attack, though horrible, are not equivalent. The federal government will eventually take charge of response efforts and military aid will be required. Yet as overwhelming as it will be for local and state resources, it is all that will be available in the first hours following the explosion… So what should local officials do? First, accept the threat and understand the military cannot arrive immediately to help. Although probability of such an attack is low compared to conventional explosives, natural disasters, or even bioterrorism, the possibility is real and the consequences catastrophic. Local officials should not delude themselves into thinking that existing plans for responding to dirty bombs can be simply expanded to deal with nuclear terrorism. The Boston Marathon Mass Casualty Martial Law Drill presented in infantile fairy tale fashion in the Boston Globe in the thick of the sentimental Christmas Season 12-15-13. Read this and see what level of critical thinking adult mind that this reflects. It’s mass consumption soap opera tabloid stuff. To me, it sounds like it is written for children to believe for a very long time to come, as if to encage them in a myth/lie as if to foster an unquestioning malleable mind. Yet the goal of our society should be to educate and empower the people to participate in the decisions that affect everyone’s lives, and the actions that are done in our name.  The FBI was calling for public help for information on the two young Tsarnaev brothers. We later found out from family member interviews that the FBI had been contacting and interfacing with the boys for over five years. The mother and the aunt said that it was a “set up”. Was it a psy op to get public acceptance of further militarization of the police as an occupation force using a martial law lockdown on the public? Would Americans give up their freedom to have a promised “security” in Boston, the cradle of American Liberty and revolution? Could they be traumatized enough to get them to accept things that would not be acceptable otherwise? Or do you believe in this fairy tale? Opening lines: “Tamerlan, the eldest, started hearing the voice as a young man. It disturbed him. It frightened him, as the voice inside grew more insistent. It may in the end have directed him. Dzhokhar, the youngest, was the child full of promise. But almost from the moment he left home, trouble and failure seemed to mark him, and risk to allure him.
